Deniz Kurdak

After earning a BFA in Stage and Costume Design, Deniz served as an academic staff member at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul. She also conducted workshops at universities and foundations in Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States.Deniz has participated in numerous group exhibitions across Turkey, Beijing, and the U.K. Her short stop-motion animation films have been screened at international film festivals, earning her recognition, including a grant from the Turkish Ministry of Culture.

Artist Statement

As a textile artist, Deniz draws and paints with fabric and thread, transcending traditional boundaries of craft by emphasising emotional repair and reconstruction. Each piece interweaves personal narratives, reflecting themes of memory, identity, and belonging, inspired by objects from her past.
Drawing on her background as a theatre designer, Deniz translates textual and conceptual ideas into visual, non-verbal forms. She blends personal narratives into her embroidery, often inspired by objects from her past. This allows her to bring conceptual and contemporary layers to this traditional art form which has long been dismissed solely as women’s craft.
