Description

Thames (Fleet : All In The Same Boat), steel, 2023

Quarantine literally means forty days of isolation and was introduced into
contemporary language to articulate holding a vessel at port before the crew and
cargo could come ashore. This was to prevent the spread of highly infectious disease.
Three large scale origami boats folded in steel plate afloat. Samuel Zealey’s practice
has a recent history of folding ‘paper planes’ in steel plate at a monumental scale –
now this folding process has evolved from an aviation form into a marine form.
‘All In The Same Boat’ literally means in English – ‘we are all in this together’. This
particular English saying has become very relevant during Covid-19 because it is the
first time that every single person upon this planet has been affected in some way or
another by the same phenomena. Zealey has said – “I think it is important to
immortalise this pandemic visually with a monument. This piece is sensitive to the
idea of quarantine but also shows how incredibly versatile and unified humanity
actually is at a time that truly matters.

Artist Statement

Zealey’s sculptural works combine playfulness of form with precise engineering and a highly developed material sensitivity. The works radiate a lively aesthetic, alert to the ways in which art and creativity can engage with questions about culture, technology and sustainability. He has a long-standing interest in the relationship between new technologies and environmental issues. With many of Zealey’s works, his visual language highlights the use of modern technological advances that impact the environment. Zealey approaches his practice with a view to creating works that highlight the environmental problems created as a result of global warming brought about by the use of nonrenewable fuels that humans continue to consume and burn. In turn, his work leads to a new awareness in theories surrounding ‘Global weirding’.
