artlounge Selects: Cansu Sezer

Artist statement

My parents were Turkish guest workers in Germany, and I grew up immersed in a perpetual tension of opposites—tradition versus modernity, foreignness versus familiarity, convention versus rebellion.
In my work, I am drawn to those boundary lines where different elements meet, attract, repel, yet somehow grow together. I am captivated by the beauty within chaos, by these intricate questions, constantly torn between them, wrestling with an elusive identity. I seek no reconciliation. I resolve nothing; I exist within it. I find exhilaration in unrest, life within conflict. For it is precisely there, on the threshold where everything both attracts and repels, that something true emerges. And despite all unresolved tensions, it is at its most raw at the beginning and most liberating afterward.

Cansu Sezer, a German-Turkish artist based in Zurich, was born in Düsseldorf in 1987 to Turkish immigrant parents. Her creative journey has been diverse, beginning with an incomplete fine arts education before she pursued and completed a design degree. This path led her to a notable career as a Creative Director in one of the German-speaking region’s leading creative agencies. In 2023, Sezer returned to painting with renewed vigor.
Her work explores existential themes, often centering on human emotions and the complex search for identity amid a world marked by contradiction and complexity.

artlounge Selects: Setenay Alpsoy

Artist statement

Setenay Alpsoy’s work reflects the complex relationship between humanity and urban landscapes. Inspired by the chaos, density, and energy of cities, she captures fleeting moments that highlight the peculiar nature of human existence within artificial environments. Her vision explores the tension between individuality and collective identity in urban spaces, focusing on humanity’s connection to the built environment rather than individual stories.

Authenticity is key, with Alpsoy depicting ordinary buildings that shape daily life. Color serves as a portal to the imagination, evoking emotions and inviting viewers to see cities differently. Growing up in Istanbul shaped her perspective, while moving to London in 2024 marked a new chapter in her artistic journey.

She is a London-based artist with a strong national presence in the UK. In September 2025, she presented new works at the London Design Festival on memory and urban transformation. Her engraving was shown in the inaugural printmaking exhibition at OPO in Scarborough in 2024, alongside Antoni Tàpies and David Hockney, while two drawings featured in the 25th Annual Exhibition of The Pastel Society at The Mall Galleries. In 2023, she held her first international solo show Seen In a New Light at J/M Gallery. She was a finalist for the Sustainable Arts Foundation Award in 2021, and her drawing Gayrettepe Last Stop was part of the 2020 Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, touring nationwide for six months. She has held six solo shows at Evin Art Gallery, and her works are in collections including the One the One Thousand Museum, Miami.

artlounge Selects: Ashima Kumar

Artist statement

Ashima Kumar’s art is a visual dialogue between nature and the human psyche, where the organic and the abstract intertwine. Inspired by the intricate beauty of the natural world and the rich tapestry of Asian cultural influences, particularly Japan and India, she creates compositions that merge symbolism, meticulous line work, and calligraphy to evoke emotion and contemplation. By playing with the contrast between light and dark, smooth and rough, Kumar creates visual tension and depth in her works. Her use of color and asymmetrical compositions further enhances the dynamic nature of her artwork. Each element within her compositions carries a deeper meaning, inviting viewers to explore multiple interpretations.
Through her art, Kumar invites viewers to pause, reflect, and discover the hidden stories within her work.

Ashima Kumar is a contemporary artist whose work pulsates with a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern artistic expression. artlounge Selects: Deniz Karakurt Sekerci

Artist statement

This theme lies at the heart of her artistic expression, where she addresses the issue of gender inequality. As the artist notes, while some progress has been made — albeit in small steps — these challenges remain deeply entrenched.

Now, as an adult woman, she frequently finds herself revisiting memories from her childhood. These moments often bring back the emotional weight of experiencing gender-based marginalisation. She reflects in particular on the question: in our society, what does a child feel when they begin to understand their gender? What do they experience? What must they sacrifice? What do they lose? What are they forced to become?

She poses powerful, open-ended questions:
Will these children limit themselves in what they aspire to do or achieve? Will they be free to live as their true selves? Or will they face early marriage, societal pressure, or violence simply because of their gender?

Deniz Karakurt Sekerci was born in Denizli and continues her artistic practice from her studio in Antalya, Turkey. In addition to her solo exhibitions, she has participated in numerous national and international group shows and workshops. Her works are included in private collections and have received recognition in various art competitions.

Recognised as a representative of contemporary art, Karakurt Sekerci can be described as an expressionist at heart. Her creative journey often begins with a single image, unfolding through complex, layered processes before arriving at the emotional depths of her own inner world. The figures and forms in her paintings are projections of an internal, spiritual lens — a kind of visual autobiography that transcends the purely visible.

In her recent works, she incorporates traditional crochet techniques onto canvas, creating authentic and tactile pieces. By using a craft historically associated with women, she continues to question and reflect on themes of womanhood, identity, and societal roles through a contemporary lens.

She graduated with first-class honours from the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Akdeniz University in 2004. In 2007, she completed her Master’s degree in Painting at the same faculty. Her thesis explored “Figurative interpretations of psychological accumulation and its outcomes in the context of the plastic arts as a reaction to introversion.”

artlounge Selects: Tracy Luck

Artist statement

Abstract composition allows me complete freedom to express myself using a range of mixed media (currently using oil, ink, acrylic, thread, wax, collage and cardboard) with specific combinations of lines, form and colour. The choice of materials and the resulting lines, colour combinations and forms depend completely on the series of paintings or the painting itself.

My intention is always to see what will happen when I go further, always with feeling and concept, always with the aim to dominate the canvas and bring my abstract story to life.

Tracy Luck is a London based mixed media abstract artist working currently with oil, acrylic, wax, ink, thread unto collage, canvas, paper, cardboard. Her abstract investigations are through painting, photography and sculpture.

Her art journey started almost 10 years ago – she is self taught and prolific, producing abstract works which are influenced by her life in London, her Caribbean heritage, forms in nature, texture and decay.

She is a painter who also likes to ‘make things’, usually as an extension of her paintings. Her artworks consist of various series (eg Maps to Nowhere / Colour Calculus series), each series dedicated to a specific idea and process, but all utilising her skills in mark making, lines, form, placement and her own text which she calls ‘unscript’, her work being a most personal conversation with herself.

MSc (Business Finance), BSc (Business & Psychology) and a previous career in oil trading at BP/Morgan Stanley in London
